Hi Nikki
I think this is a great idea and a bonus the modellers are willing to share the costs. My vote is yes.

Cheers Keith

In principal i'm very much in favour of this, but with limitations.

1. The computer should be set up so it is password protected and can only be used for general acess to specific and pre-programmed web sights ie to gain weather and NOTAM info etc. and not available for general internet surfing.

2. There should be no telephone access on the line. This could run up large uncontrolled bills which we had not budgeted for.

Subjct to that I'm all in favour, and glad to hear it has progressed to this stage. Congratulations to the committee.

Hi Nikki

I think the Broadband is a great idea and can provide me and others with safety info, Notams etc, it would also help with contacting suppliers and manufacturers etc when parts and service items are required! Presumably we would be paying for unlimited broadband usage so no need to restrict sites (unless to keep Mike the Bike off the porn sites) oops! or should I say ebay!

Not really sure if we need a weather station though, its the forecast that is important and not the current weather conditions, we can all look out the window and see what it is like! Also we have a limited weather station on site to tell us current wind strength and direction, if the broadband installation hopefully goes ahead then we will have plenty of access to existing professional weather sites!

Safe flying to all!

OK, Marquee - you've rattled my cage now - so here's my take on it.

Complete waste of resources and Club funds is my view - even with the modellers contribution.

Think how many burgers that money would buy!!

Onions with mine, please!!!   Kiss

Mike

ps - that's a NO from me.

I don't believe anyone could rattle your cage Mike! Surely you see the advantage of being able to have use of the tinternetweb at WZ ? You could use this to also order burgers, onions and even cheese slices from Tesco Direct! WOW!  ;o)

Re the costs - don't forget the BT installation costs - about £110 I think.

I made the suggestion on the back of someone's e-mail providing a website for local weather stations, without realizing the implications or costs.  Must be more circumspect with my ideas  Smiley.  However, I still think it would be a good idea.  Surely I'm not the only one where looking out the window doesn't help greatly with the weather - the sea breezes at Steart mean it is often a howling gale here whereas I guess it's much calmer at W/Z.  Nice to be able to find out rather than having a wasted hour round trip.  Costs if shared with the modellers would seem to be reasonable although that opens up a number of other issues as to access to the club and the computer.  I thought broadband was a fixed fee independent of traffic, so I'm not sure why general internet surfing would be a problem, but since the telephone could be, why bother to install one, then there's no problem about costs.  So I'm still in favour.

Thanks to all on the committee for your time in considering this.

Phil.

Pete

John  has looked into it and as I said in my email no connection charges from BT. There is no need for a telephone at Zoy, so no charges for calls.

Stand corrected - just checked their website and they are doing a special of zero connection charge and then only £13 pm thereafter (plus line rental) for Basic broadband and phone.

Personally I think it would be a great idea to have braodband and connect a weather station and possibly at least one webcam. For those of us who live a good distance from the airfield it would allow us to check out the actual conditions at WZ before we set out. Saturday morning was an example - when I set out from home the conditions seemed fine and the metoffice forecast was looking good too, but when I arrived at the airfield it was very blowy and the forecast was looking even worse. I'm sure it would also be useful to pick up any last minute forecast and Notam information, but that isn't my main reason for wanting it

Well according to the voting so far - all 8 of them - it looks as though we are getting broadband and a weather station despite what some have been saying in their emails.

Mind you 8 votes is a better turnout than some local elections!

If we had a camera, we could then keep an eye of how many burgers Mikes eats!

Maybe there is going to be a rush of votes on the 31st?

PS
I have voted NO simply because I think the weather station is too expensive.
Broadband, cameras, etc - my vote would be YES
Maybe if we had a simpler (cheaper) weather station which would give wind temp etc and interfaces with the pc and have a camera ( to show action/fog/rain etc) then we would have the best of both worlds?
Shame the existing one does not interface with a PC.

At present we are being offered only all or nothing. Most seem in favour of broadband internet, but many( some) are against the weather station. The vote options don't really represent fair questions. So, any chance that the vote options could be changed to reflect the fact that there are 2 decisions being offered which are not directly linked? At present I would feel compelled to vote no, as although I would like broadband, I don't want the weather station.
the choices ought to be-

1 Broadband
2 Broadband plus weather station
3 Neither

Webcams are cheap in comparison to the weather station and can be added without a vote, I would have thought depending on the outcome of the first vote.
